How to Stop Tooth Grinding

If you have frequent headaches or have worn or broken teeth, you may have bruxism, also known as teeth clenching and grinding. Bruxism can happen unconsciously while you’re awake and during sleep.

People with bruxism often have a problem with the alignment of their bite and may have an underbite or overbite. Bruxism is also commonly associated with stress, whether from stress in your life or stress inside the mouth and jaw.  When the teeth and jaw do not work together properly, that places tension. This tension can lead to painful oral health and physical symptoms.

At Reedy Creek Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Emily Ann Reece can help you identify the symptoms that accompany bruxism and help you eliminate the pain that often accompanies this concern.

Treating Bruxism

We use nightguards, which are custom-fitted to the patient’s mouth to fit over the teeth. Nightguards are similar to mouthguards in that they prevent the top and bottom teeth from grinding against each other. This appliance also holds the jaw in place to relax the muscles and jaw joints. Treating bruxism with nightguards can prevent worn or broken teeth and even tooth loss.
